Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the non-degree program, students will:
- Demonstrate the knowledge, skills and teaching dispositions of an effective classroom teacher (as required by state and national educator preparation standards).
- Demonstrate culturally competent teaching through equitable instructional practices that acknowledge learner diversity and contribute to belonging in classrooms.
- Demonstrate assessment literacy through the utilization of formative and summative assessment data to establish appropriate rigor within the instructional planning progress and to effectively monitor individual learner progress.
- Establish effective classroom management based on an understanding of the developmental and age-appropriate needs of all learners.
- Demonstrate the ability to plan effective units of instruction that align to Indiana academic standards and incorporate research-based instructional practices.
- Exhibit an understanding of scientifically-based literacy practices at all developmental levels.
- Exhibit an understanding of tiered learning support systems, including the ability to provide Tier 1 support to struggling learners at the classroom level and an understanding of Tier 2 and Tier 3 supports for students requiring additional academic intervention (e.g., Title I academic services) and/or formal special education services.
- Model strong interpersonal skills required to develop healthy relationships with students and their families and contribute to strong home-school partnerships.
Non-Degree Programs:
These non-degree programs lead to an Indiana Department of Education teacher license in the area of Elementary Education, Secondary Education, or Special Education when all criteria are met.
Admission Requirements:
Admission to the Purdue Fort Wayne Transition To Teaching (TTT) Programs requires a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited postsecondary institution with:
- an official transcript reflecting 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 Grade Point Average Scale or
- an official transcript reflecting 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 Grage Point Average Scale and documentaton of five (5) years of professional experience or
- an official transcript reflecting 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 Grage Point Average Scale and proof of passing state approved content area examination(s) in the subject areas;
- Secondary TTT program also allows for the completion of a graduate degree from an accredited postsecondary institution in the subject area or related field in which the person wants to teach.
In addition, all students must submit the following documentation for admission to the program:
- Criminal History Report
- Statement of Academic Purpose
- Personal History Statement
- Two (2) Letters of Reference Resume
- Verification of Passing Praxis Content Exam Score - Applicants that do not meet the required grade point average at admission, or secondary education applicants seeking a teaching license for a content area that is different from their undergraduate degree major MUST provide evidence of a passing Praxis Content Exam score prior to admission.
Active Status:
- For those individuals seeing a Transition to Teaching Enrollment letter for the purpose of receiving a Transition to Teaching License, you must be enrolled in your first course and are in good academic standing.
- For those who are inactive for two or more semesters, they will be considered as inactive status and will need to reapply to the program to continue.
To be recommended for an Indiana Teacher License, you must also complete the following:
- Pass all required content area examination(s) in the appropriate subject areas
- Elementary Education = Praxis Content Exam #5006, including subtests Exams #5007 (Elementary Education: Reading & Language Arts & Social Studies) and #5008 (Elementary Education: Math & Science)
- Secondary Education = Praxis Content Exams vary by area of study; see the program director for additional details
- Special Education = Praxis Content Exam #5355 Special Education: Foundational Knowledge
- All Grades = Praxis Content Exam vary by area of study; see the program director for additional details
- Pass all required examination in pedagogy
- Elementary Education = Praxis Pedagogy Assessment Exam #5622 (Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades K-6)
- Secondary Education = Praxis Pedagogy Assessment Exam #5624 (Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7-12)
- Special Education = Praxis Pedagogy Assessment Exam #5625 (Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades Prek-12)
- All Grades = Praxis Pedadogy Assessment Exam #5262 (Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades Prek-12)
- Successfully pass all required course work as listed in the Plan of Study for the program with a grade of C- or higher.
- Complete all program assessments at or above the minimal level of acceptable performance.
- Maintain a GPA in the program of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale.
- Obtain CPR/AED/Heimlich certification.
- Complete education and training on the prevention of child suicide.
Program Approval
The Transition To Teaching programs have received all necessary approvals from the Indiana State Board of Education and the Graduate School to be offered at PFW. In addition, all three programs have been approved by the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) funding. Individuals who qualify for WIOA education and training funds through their local WorkOne office may receive tuition and supply fee financial assistance for any of these programs.
Masters of Science
Students wishing to pursue a Masters of Science degree may apply credits earned as part of the Transition To Teaching program to that associated degree option. Please your Academic Advisor for specific details.
