LING 51101 - Methods And Materials For TESOL 1 This course provides an overview and critical discussion on the profile of English language learners (ELLs), their cultural and linguistic backgrounds, features of academic language, the main language teaching theories and methods and how they inform current practices in various contexts, as well as US education policy on ELLs. The course also has an emphasis on the teaching of listening and speaking. The students are given ample opportunities to understand the integration of implicit and explicit instruction on various language concerns, e.g., phoneme-awareness, word augmentation, sentence structure, listening comprehension, oral fluency etc. Students will also apply the principles of teaching to a mini-teaching task, where they can put theories into practice, observe and share feedback. In order to qualify for TENL certification, students must obtain a grade of C or higher in all TENL courses.
