In addition to the major in elementary education, secondary education, or an all-grade program students may earn a minor in exceptional needs-mild. This minor qualifies a teacher to teach students who have Mild Intellectual Impairment, Moderate Intellectual Disability, Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Emotional Disabilities. Completers of this 27-credit hour teacher preparation program will become eligible for Indiana certification in Exceptional Needs-Mild.

Program Requirements

One of the following: (Depending on course of study) 3 credits
EDUC K305 - Teaching the Exceptional Learner in the Elementary School Cr. 3.
EDUC K306 - Teaching Students with Special Needs in Secondary Classrooms Cr. 3.
Each of the following: 24 credits
EDUC K307 - Methods for Teaching Students with Special Needs Cr. 3.
EDUC K352 - Education of Children with Learning Problems (LD and EMR) Cr. 3.
EDUC M201 - Laboratory/Field Experience Cr. 0-3. (0 credits)
EDUC K370 - Introduction to Learning Disabilities Cr. 3.
EDUC K371 - Assessment and Individualized Instruction in Reading and Mathematics Cr. 3.
EDUC M301 - Laboratory/Field Experience Cr. 0-3. (0 credits)
EDUC K441 - Transition Across the Lifespan Cr. 3.
EDUC K453 - Management of Academic and Social Behavior Cr. 3.
EDUC K465 - Service Delivery Systems and Consultation Strategies Cr. 3.
EDUC M470 - Practicum Cr. 3-8. (Final Course - 3 credits.)

This program is only available to teacher candidates enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at IPFW. Teachers who have already earned a teaching license must complete our graduate certificate in Exceptional Needs-Mild program.

Teacher candidates will receive an Exceptional Needs-Mild license in P-12.

Teacher candidates wishing to add Exceptional Needs-Mild to their license must complete all courses above and pass the following Praxis II exam(s):
     Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Applications (0543)
     OR
     the Pearson Indiana CORE Assessments for Educator Licensure Exceptional Needs-Mild Intervention (P-12) (025) and Exceptional Needs-Mild Intervention Reading Instruction (5-12) (064).
