Art (B.F.A.) 4-Year Plan

This plan is an example only. Please see your advisor to develop your individualized plan. Course rotation and course offerings are subject to change based on faculty availability and enrollment minimums.
Each student enters the program as a Bachelor of Art (B.A.) degree student. Students wishing to pursue the Bachelor of Fine Art (B.F.A.) degree must submit a portfolio of their first- and second-year work to attain formal acceptance into the B.F.A. program.

Spring 1st Year:
- AD 10502 - Digital Imaging Cr. 3.

3D Studio Elective - Cr. 3.
- Choose one of the following approved 3D studio electives. - AD 23101 - Sculpture Fundamentals Cr. 3.
- AD 23301 - Metalsmithing Fundamentals Cr. 3.
- AD 23501 - Ceramics Fundamentals Cr. 3.
General Education A or B Elective Cr. 3 - ENGL 23301 - Intermediate Expository Writing Cr. 3.
- Recommended course for Art and Design students. Any approved A/B course. First-Year Portfolio
The First-Year Portfolio is a mandatory evaluative review for all students to ensure students have met the competency level in the first-year foundations program. Once a student is enrolled in or has completed five of six first-year foundation courses, they must submit a portfolio to be reviewed by the Department of Art and Design faculty. Work from outside of the foundation-level courses will not be accepted for consideration; therefore, careful documentation and storage of one’s work is essential for success. Students will continue in the Second-Year foundation courses upon a satisfactory portfolio review. The Department of Art and Design will send out a portfolio template and detailed information regarding the portfolio review process.
Students who do not meet the minimum score of 70% will be deferred and asked to resubmit a First-Year portfolio after taking more foundational courses.
Students wishing to pursue an Art (B.F.A.) (Ceramics, Drawing, Imaging and Photography, Metalsmithing, Painting, Printmaking, or Sculpture) degree program may formally apply in the Second-Year Portfolio Review.
Spring 2nd Year:
- AD 20301 - Web Design I: Introduction To Web Design Cr. 3.
2D Studio Elective - Cr. 3.
- Choose one of the following 2D studio electives. - AD 22301 - Figure Drawing I Cr. 3.
- AD 24101 - Printmaking Fundamentals Cr. 3.
Additional Studio Elective - Cr. 3.
- Choose one of the following approved studio electives. - AD 10401 - Introduction To Typography Cr. 3.
- AD 20601 - Illustration I: Dry Media Cr. 3.
- AD 20701 - Photography I: Portraiture Cr. 3.
- AD 20801 - Video And Intermedia I Cr. 3.
General Education B4 Scientific Ways of Knowing - Cr. 3.
- Choose one of the approved B4 courses. General Education A2 Speaking and Listening: Cr. 3.
-Recommended courses for ARt and Design students. Any approved A2 Speaking and Listening course is acceptable.

A student denied entry into the B.F.A. program will continue in the B.A. program. Denied students can apply one additional time for acceptance into the B.F.A. program with permission from the department chair.
The Second-Year Portfolio Review serves as a formal application for acceptance into the B.F.A. Art degree program.
Fall 3rd Year:
Advanced Art History Cr. 3. -any department approved Advanced Art History General Education B6 Humanistic Ways of Knowing Cr. 3. -any approved B6 course. Advanced Studio/Concentration Cr. 9. -choose courses specific area of concentraion Spring 3rd Year:
General Education B7 Artistic Ways of Knowing Cr. 3. -any approved B7 course. General Education A or B Elective Cr. 3. -any approved A/B course. Advanced Studio/Concentraion Cr. 9. -choose courses specific area of concentraion Third-Year Portfolio Students at the end of their junior year, or upon completion of 84 credit hours, of which 48 credit hours must be studio courses, will submit a third portfolio for review. The portfolio must contain a minimum of 12 pieces from the concentration. The department will send out detailed information regarding this review to students prior to the review. Successful students will be allowed to enroll in their remaining coursework in both advanced studio and senior thesis and exhibition courses. Portfolio review approval is a prerequisite for registration for Senior Thesis I and Internship, if applicable. Students whose work does not meet the standards of the department reviewers (90%) may be required to change their degree program back to the Art and Design Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) program. A deferred student will be asked to re-submit their portfolio for re-admittance into the B.F.A. program after taking additional courses in the area of study. Denied students may apply one additional time for re-admittance into the B.F.A. program with permission from the department chair. Total Credits: 120 minimum
