Program: Master of Science (M.S.)
Department of Mathematical Sciences
College of Science
Kettler Hall 200 ~ 260-481-6233
Peter D. Dragnev, Chair
W. Douglas Weakley, Graduate Program Director
The M.S. degree in Mathematics is the appropriate program if:
- You are, or plan to be, employed in a position in business or industry that requires significant proficiency in mathematics or statistics, or
- You wish to earn HLC certification as a secondary school teacher, or
- You wish to enter a doctoral program in mathematics or statistics.
Upon completion of the M.S. in Mathematics degree:
- Students will master fundamental concepts across core areas in the mathematical sciences, with emphasis on at least one area including analysis, linear algebra, and applied statistics.
- Students will develop expertise in reading, analyzing, and constructing mathematical and statistical arguments.
- Students will learn to solve problems, use, and interpret appropriate models, and identify limitations of models.
- Students will learn to effectively communicate technical mathematics and statistics, orally and in writing, at a level appropriate to the intended audience.
- Students will have command of current software and technological resources useful in math and statistics, with a breadth of knowledge helpful in mastering future resources.
To qualify for admission, you should have a background in mathematics that includes multivariate calculus and linear algebra; coursework in analysis, differential equations, discrete mathematics, or abstract algebra will be helpful.
Academic Regulations
In addition to satisfying regulations that apply to all Purdue University graduate students, you must earn at least a grade of B- in each course used to satisfy degree requirements. However, your advisory committee may agree to accept up to two courses in which you earn grades of C.

College Scorecard
The U.S. Department of Education has created a scorecard for each university and its programs. The scorecard shows data for the university such as graduation rate, average annual cost, and median earnings. Then, when certain minimum standards have been met, data are available for a specific program. That data could include median earnings, median total debt, and number of graduates. The link below will help you learn more:
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?151102-Purdue-University-Fort-Wayne&fos_code=2701&fos_credential=5
Additional Courses: Credits 18
- Credits for additional courses are approved by your advisory committee.
- The courses are to be selected from graduate-level courses in mathematics or statistics, but may include approved courses from computer science, engineering, physics or business appropriate for your emphasis.
- STAT 51100, STAT 51600, and STAT 51700 do not count toward this master’s degree program.
Total Minimum Credits: 30
Student Responsibility
You are responsible for satisfying the graduation requirements specified for your selected program. Thus, it is essential that you develop a thorough understanding of the required courses, academic policies and procedures governing your academic career. If you cannot complete all program requirements by your stated graduation date but fail to remove those from your plan of study, the Registrar’s Office in consultation with your academic advisor will remove unmet pursuits from your plan of study. All requests for exceptions to specific requirements must be made in writing and may be granted only by written approval from the Graduate Director.
