For Theatre Majors Entering in an Odd Numbered Year: BFA in Musical Theatre.
In June 2021, the Purdue University Board of Trustees adopted a civics literacy graduation requirement for undergraduates, including all transfer students. This requirement applies to all undergraduate students who enter Purdue University Fort Wayne in Fall 2022 or any subsequent semester. There are three different pathways:
Civics Event pathway - Attend four approved civics-related events and pass the required exam; or
Civics Literacy Recordings pathway - Complete four recordings located in the Civics Literacy Brightspace module and pass the required exam; or
Approved course pathway - Complete any approved course and pass the required exam. The exam is independent of the approved course. Course options include both Gen Ed and Elective offerings.

Fall 1st Year
Students may test out of Rudiments via Music Theory placement test. If placed directly into Music Theory I (which will not be taken until fall of sophomore year typically), students will instead complete three credits of either a general education course, a theatre technology course or a dance technique course in place of Rudiments. Students may also choose to start taking private voice lessons in the Music School. If opting to take any approved dance technique course, depending on the student’s preparation, this may be a level I course to serve as a pre-requisite for the required level II courses or the student may place directly into level II upon instructor’s approval.
OR
Gen Ed course (B4 suggested)
NB-Students may opt to take Lighting Techniques either fall of freshman or sophomore year, or they may opt to take Costume Techniques spring of either freshman or sophomore year. This is an either/or choice, and they do not need to take both of these courses.
Spring 1st Year
*NB-The requirements for the BFA allow the student to choose either Stage Management, offered every spring, or Directing: Page to Stage, offered every fall. If the student chooses not to take Stage Management in freshman year, the course should be replaced with either: THTR 26100 Intro. to Design; THTR 35300 Costume Techniques*, or another GEN ED course
*NB-The BFA requirements allow the student to choose either THTR 35300 Costumes Techniques, offered every spring, or THTR 26200 Lighting Technology, offered every fall.
General Education Course Cr. 3.
Suggested: A3 Quantitative Reasoning STAT 12500 Communicating With Statistics or MA 14000 Practical Quantitative Reasoning .
Total Credits: 13-16
The BFA Project
During the junior or senior year, the BFA student is required to complete the BFA project. The student plans this project with the head of the Musical Theatre program or one of the other performance faculty, and it entails either performance of a role in one of the department’s productions combined with independent research or it entails a research and performance project designed outside of the production season.
Fall 3rd Year
- THTR 33800 - Acting III Cr. 3.
- THTR 41300 - Advanced Voice For The Stage Cr. 3.
- THTR 47000 - Theatre And Society I Cr. 3.
Choose: Two General Education courses OR One General Education Course and THTR 44000 Directing: Page to Stage Cr. 6*
*NB-The BFA student has the option to take either Stage Management, offered every spring, or Directing, offered every fall. It is recommended that Directing be taken now, the fall of junior year, but it may be taken earlier, if the student and advisor feel the student is ready. If this requirement (either Stage Management or Directing) is already completed prior to fall of junior year, it is recommended that the BFA student take a GEN ED course, either a B6 or B7.
If the BFA student has not yet completed the technology requirement (options-either Costume Techniques, offered every spring, or Lighting Technology, offered every fall), it is possible in fall of junior year to take THTR 26100 Lighting Technology or a GEN ED, either B6 or B7 suggested.
If the BFA student has completed both the technology requirement and also the Stage Management/Directing requirement, it is possible to take one or two GEN EDs, suggested B6 and/or B7.
OPTIONAL ADDITIONAL GENERAL EDUCATION COURSE Cr. 3 -In addition to the suggestions above that allow for several options (to complete either the technology requirement, the Directing/Stage Management requirement or one or two GEN ED in the B6 or B7 areas), the BFA student may also complete the B5 GEN ED requirement.
THE MUSICAL THEATRE BFA PROJECT Cr. 1 -If the BFA student has either been cast in a major role or has planned a Musical Theatre research project with a performance faculty member, the BFA project may be completed this term.
**NB-If the BFA student has already completed the required 100-level private voice lessons, then the student should enroll at the 200 level now.
