Accreditation:

• The Mild Intervention Minor program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and nationally recognized as a high-quality program through the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).  Because of these statuses, students who meet specified requirements are eligible for a Mild Intervention teaching license in the state of Indiana.  Indiana holds reciprocal licensing agreements with other states.

Declaring this Minor:

• Declare this minor with the Program Director of the Special Education Program within the School of Education.
• NOTE:  This program is only available to teacher candidates enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at Purdue University Fort Wayne.  Teachers who have already earned a teaching license must complete our Special Education Graduate Certificate in Mild Intervention.

Program Requirements:

• The catalog term for the minor will match that of your major degree.
• You must earn a grade of C- or higher for all courses required in the minor.
• You must be admitted to Block 1 or receive permission from the Special Education Program Director.

Teacher candidates who are majoring in early childhood education or elementary education will complete 21 credits to earn this minor in exceptonal needs - mild.  Those majoring in middle school education, secondary education, or an all-grade program will complete 27 credits to earn this minor in exceptional needs - mild.  Both options meet the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) licensure requirements, including the Science of Reading, to qualify a teacher to teach students who have Mild Intellectual Impairment, Moderate Intellectual Disability, Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Emotional Disabilities. 

Teacher candidates wishing to add a Mild Intervention teaching license to their license must complete all courses above and pass the Exceptional Needs: Mild Intervention licensure exam (Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Applications - Code 5543).  Passing each of the required courses above and the licensure exam allows a teacher candidate to apply for the Indiana Exceptional Needs-Mild Intervention license in P-12.
