College of Liberal Arts Thematic Requirements


Thematic Requirements Course List

Students will take one course in each of these five areas to ensure that they have an opportunity to deepen their traditional liberal arts education while also preparing for a culturally diverse, technologically advanced, and increasingly globalized and complex world. See the lists below for courses that have been approved to meet each thematic area:

Stipulations:
  1.  A single course may not be used to fulfill more than one of the five thematic requirements. 

  2.  Courses taken to fulfill the five thematic requirements must come from courses offered under at least three different course prefixes.

  3.  At least one course must come from the list of courses approved as dealing exclusively or primarily with a Non-Western culture or cultures.

B. Conflict and Cooperation: Credits 3


This thematic area includes the study of war, diplomacy, migration, trade, and/or development in historical and/or contemporary contexts. 

C. Institutions and Behavior: Credits 3


The Institutions and Behaviors thematic area includes the study of human institutions and/or individual behavior.

D. Regional/Geographic Study: Credits 3


This thematic area includes the study of the world outside the United States from historical, political, and/or cultural perspectives. May be fulfilled through approved study abroad programs. 

E. Digital Humanities/Public Humanities: Credits 3


This thematic area includes the study of the intersections between the humanities and digital technologies, as well as the study of humanities in the public realm, including, for example, site-work at historical museums, public performances of creative work, the development of electronic archives and databases, community-based writing projects, etc.
