The B.S.Ed. in secondary education with a emphasis in educational studies is intended to prepare students for successful careers in diverse areas, including serving as directors of after school programs or working in informal education organizations like the Literacy Alliance, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, and the Fort Wayne Urban League.

To earn the B.S.Ed. in Education Studies (nonlicensure) Secondary, you must satisfy the requirements of Purdue University Fort Wayne (Regulations ) and the School of Education.


Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of a major in Secondary Education - Education Policy students will:

  • Become more caring, humane and functional citizens in a global, multicultural, democratic society 
  • Improve the human condition by creating positive learning environments
  • Become change agents by demonstrating reflective professional practice
  • Solve client problems through clear, creative analyses
  • Assess client performance, creating and executing effective teaching, counseling, and educational leadership by utilizing a variety of methodologies reflecting current related research
  • Utilize interdisciplinary scholarship, demonstrating technology and critical literacies, and effectively communicating with all stakeholders.

Grades of C- or higher are required in each course used toward this degree.  Minimum 2.70 cumulative grade point average is required for graduation.

General Education Requirements Credits: 33


Student are expected to complete a minimum of 3 credits in each of the following categories:  1) Foundational Intellectual Skills (A1, A2, and A3); 2) Ways of Knowing (B4, B5, B6, and B7); and Capstone (C8).  Then, an additional 9 credits can be completed in Foundational Intellectual Skills and/or Ways of Knowing categories.  Several of the general education courses may be completed with Education Studies Major courses, Additional Major Required Courses, First Focus Required Minor courses, and Second Focus required courses below. Further details about the General Education program as well as a list of courses in each category can be found at: General Education Requirements  . Additionally, your academic advisor can provide a list of recommended General Education courses.

Select a second area of focus that supports your educational and career goals. This should be either a PFW minor or the Teaching English As A New Language Certificate.

Student Responsibility


You are responsible for ensuring that you satisfy all graduation requirements specified for each selected program.  Thus, it is essential that you develop a thorough understanding of the required courses, academic policies, and procedures governing your academic career.  If you cannot complete all program requirements by your stated graduation date but fail to remove those from your plan of study, the Registrar’s Office in consultation with your academic advisor will remove unmet pursuits from your plan of study. Changing curricular records during the graduation term of application may affect state or federal financial aid awards. All requests for exceptions to specific requirements must be made in writing and may be granted only by written approval from the appropriate chair or dean.
