Advisory Committee
Each candidate for a master’s degree is assigned an advisory committee consisting of three members. The director of the graduate nursing program serves as the major advisor and chair of the advisory committee. Other committee members include a student-designated professor and the chair of the Department of Nursing. This committee prepares and approves the plan of study (described below), advises, and assists in thesis development when applicable.
Plan of Study
Students pursuing a master’s degree should meet with the Director of the Graduate Program and develop a preliminary plan of study prior to the initial registration. The plan of study identifies a primary area and lists specific courses and all other requirements of the degree. The formal plan of study is approved by the advisory committee, including the chair of the Department of Nursing, and must be submitted to the Graduate School before the final semester of enrollment.
Transfer Credit
Transfer of Credits: A maximum of 12 hours of graduate credit from another institution may be approved by the student’s committee for inclusion in a program of study.
Transfer Credits from other Purdue campuses: Although students may take courses on other Purdue campuses, at least 51% of the total credit hours used to satisfy degree requirements must be earned in residence on the IPFW campus. Remote televised instruction from a campus is considered to have been obtained from that campus, regardless of the student’s physical location.
Credit for courses taken in post baccalaureate status: Students are eligible to include in the program of study, no more than 12 hours of graduate credit taken while enrolled as a post baccalaureate resident prior to being admitted to a graduate degree program.
Grades
A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale is required through completion of the program.
Time Limitations
Special permission is required for students to continue in the program beyond five consecutive years.
Admission Requirements
- Bachelor of Science (B.S.) with a major in nursing from a program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
- Undergraduate 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- Registered nurse licensure in the state where you will be completing your clinical hours
- 300-level undergraduate research and 300-level undergraduate statistics within the last 5 years
- 1 year experience working as an RN
- TOEFL examination required for students whose native language is not English
