EDU 58200 - Addictions Counseling The goal of this course is to acquaint the student with concepts regarding drug and alcohol use, abuse, and dependence and the resulting impact on family, work, health, and community. Attention will be given to the disease and harm reduction models of addiction, and the multidisciplinary approaches to assessing, treating, and preventing addiction behaviors from developmental and multicultural approaches. This course will also introduce students to addictive behaviors that are not substance related, the concept of dual-diagnosis, and relapse prevention. Motivational interviewing techniques and relapse prevention training will be introduced and practiced within the context of the class. This course is designed to prepare students as facilitators who are able and willing to utilize current research, addiction concepts, and practical skills related to abuse and addiction in a variety of counseling settings. Additionally, concepts related to psychopharmacology, treatment for mental health disorders utilizing medication therapy, and counseling clients for effective communication.

Student Learning Outcomes 1. Examine ethical, legal, and cultural issues related to addictions counseling, including stigma, confidentiality, and advocacy.
2. Analyze the biopsychosocial dimensions of addiction across diverse populations.
3. Evaluate various models of addiction (e.g., disease model, harm reduction, biopsychosocial) and their implications for case conceptualization and treatment planning.
4. Design individualized treatment plans that incorporate stages of change, relapse prevention strategies, and recovery supports.
5. Differentiate between substance-induced disorders and primary mental health conditions in dual diagnosis cases.
