EDU 59200 - Research And Appraisal In Counseling


This course examines both assessment/appraisal and research methods in counseling. Students will learn statistical, psychometric, sociometric, and clinical principles crucial to professional interpretation of standardized and informal data regarding individual clients. Students will also learn to assess specific research methodologies, identify areas for research-based evaluations, interpret research results, and demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of applied research processes. Students will gain the knowledge and skills to conduct and interpret both assessment protocols and advanced research protocols in a variety of counseling settings. Ethical and advocacy issues related to cultural and individual differences in assessment and research practices will be examined.

Restricted to graduate students in the Counselor Education program only.

1.  Examine ethical and advocacy considerations in the administration and interpretation of assessments as well as the implementation of research methods across diverse populations.
2.  Differentiate among various research methodologies and assessment instruments based on reliability, validity, and cultural appropriateness for use with diverse client populations.
3.  Assess the methodological strengths and limitations of established research studies that utilize clinical assessment data in a variety of counseling research settings.
4.  Design a culturally responsive research project with advanced research methodologies that incorporates standardized assessment tools to evaluate counseling interventions.
