EDU 58100 - Crisis And Trauma Counseling This course focuses on knowledge of the types of interventions used to address a range of crises, disasters, and other trauma-causing events. Students will explore definitions and types of crises, disasters, and emergencies, as well as theory and models applied to specific events. Additionally, this course will introduce you to the impact of trauma on the development of the individual. We will also discuss child maltreatment, intimate partner violence, refugee mental health, veteran mental health, and models of grief and loss counseling. Crisis and trauma interventions will be introduced and practiced within the context of the class. This course is designed to prepare you to be a facilitator who is able and willing to utilize current research, concepts, and practical skills related to crisis, disaster, and trauma in a variety of counseling settings.
Preparation for Course Restricted to graduate students in the Counselor Education program only.
Cr. 3. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Synthesize current research to inform best practices in trauma assessment and intervention.
2. Apply trauma-informed principles to the development of intervention plans that address the specific needs of individuals and communities affected by trauma.
3. Design culturally responsive trauma interventions that address interpersonal, historical and intergenerational trauma.
4. Assess ethical and cultural considerations in trauma counseling practice critically, including vicarious trauma and counselor self-care strategies.
5. Formulate strategies for integrating trauma-informed care within organizational and community settings.
