COM 58400 - Historical/Critical Research In Communication


Introduction to modes of qualitative research in communication, including theoretical assumptions, bibliographical methods, varying approaches to historical and critical inquiry, and the standards and techniques of scholarly writing. Emphasis is placed on historical research during fall semesters and on critical research during spring semesters.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Identify an academic problem related to research in historical communication.
2.  Produce a significance statement explaining why an academic problem should be addressed through research.
3.  Develop a research question or thesis statement that can be pursued through historical and/or critical inquiry.
4.  Construct a literature review to advance the relevance of the research question or thesis statement.
5.  Engage in historical and/or critical inquiry to address the main idea of the project.
6.  Draw significant conclusions about the research topic based on the analysis completed.
