COM 52300 - Communication In Personal Relationships


Explores the initiation, development, maintenance, and deterioration of family, friend, and romantic relationships. Explores relational phenomena, such as communication and gender differences, computer-mediated relationships, attraction, relational culture, and stages of dissolution.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Identify major theories, key concepts, and historical developments within the field of communication research on close relationships (romantic, friendship, and family).
2.  Explain the methodological approaches used in personal relationships research, including quantitative and qualitative designs.
3.  Critique the strengths and limitations of specific research studies regarding their methodology, data interpretation, and conclusions.
4.  Evaluate the validity of research findings and assess their applicability to real-world close relationships.
5.  Formulate testable research questions based on existing communication literature on personal relationships.
6.  Apply theoretical concepts and research findings to analyze communication behaviors within their own or others’ close relationships.
