COM 52100 - Theories Of Rhetoric


A comprehensive survey of the principal figures, theories, and movements in rhetoric from the classical era to the present.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Understand the intellectual histories of rhetoric.
2.  Become familiar with paradigms and vocabularies for describing, explaining, and shaping the social arena of discourse and rhetoric.
3.  Gain an appreciation of the connections between rhetoric and social responsibility.
4.  Survey a wide array of debates and literatures relevant to rhetorical theory and consider seriously their critical implications in a multicultural world.
5.  Cultivate an appreciation of rhetorical practice and theory as they affect our everyday lives.
6.  Apply theories of rhetoric to contemporary social problems.
7.  Improve our understanding and validations of the achievements, experiences, and perspectives of marginalized individuals and groups.
