MUSC 31100 - Commercial Applied Piano



Private applied lessons at the 300-level include a focus on reading and performing written music fluently, interpreting and playing chord charts, and understanding the role of piano/keyboards within commercial music performance and recording.

Preparation for Course
P: Department permission required. Restricted to students admitted to a program in the School of Music.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Develop proficiency in playing assigned major and minor scales and arpeggios as appropriate to level and benchmarks.
2.  Identify and play all blues scales, major and minor as required by assigned repertoire.
3.  Sight-read an assigned four-chord progression, with versatile comping using both hands and appropriate voicings.
4.  Sight-read a piece with simple notation.
5.  Play a piece of classical music, focusing on fingering, dynamics, articulations, and musical interpretation in accordance with published benchmarks.
6.  Identify how to voice chords on a basic chord chart.
7.  Demonstrate ability to perform collaboratively in a band setting.
