EDU 13500 - Introduction To Early Childhood Education



This course has a dual focus. First, it is an overview of the field including an historic perspective, program models, goal of early childhood education, and professional organizations. The second focus emphasizes learning observation skills, understanding the characteristics of young children, teacher-child interaction, and classroom management skills.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Analyze critically, synthesize, and integrate scholarly writings and research about a) the history of the profession of early childhood education; b) developmentally appropriate practices; c) professional ethics; and d) advocacy for young children, families, and early childhood programs.
2.  Demonstrate respect for and informed appreciation of systems that influence children’s learning and development - family, peer group, school, community, culture, etc.
3.  Reflect on knowledge of child development, principles of developmentally appropriate practice, and characteristics of specific program models while participating in HIGH QUALITY programs for young children.
4.  Demonstrate respectful, professional behavior a) when participating in discussions and experiences; and b) when interacting with young children, families, and staff in early childhood programs.
