DANC 11000 - Musical Theatre Dance I



This course emphasizes dance terminology, technique and execution of the body of dance repertoire associated with American Musical Theatre. Class will include stretching, strengthening, across the floor and center floor combinations. A variety of dance styles typical of a specific collection of American Musical Theatre Repertoire will be included throughout the semester including ballet, modern, tap, jazz and ballroom. Specific musical theatre choreographers will also be studied. Students will learn combinations and practice “mock” auditions throughout the semester. The course is continues in the second half of this two-course sequence, with Musical Theatre Dance II.

1.  Established a firm foundation in basic dance skills.

3.  Will be more comfortable with stretching and personal range of motion.
4.  Will understand and be able to use transitions to link steps together.
5.  Will have observed and discussed several musical theatre choreographers.
6.  Will have achieved training the body to learn and execute choreography quicker to enhance the audition process.
