ANTH 20700 - Introduction To Museum Studies



This course will introduce students to the history of museums, their purpose, and their roles in society. Students will learn about the types of museums, the work of museums, and contemporary museum practices. The course will also examine contemporary issues and debates within the profession as well as explore the future of museums.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Identify core museum studies literature and museum reference resources.
2.  Interpret contemporary museum practices within the context of the history of museums.
3.  Understand the different departments within museums and the work of museums.
4.  Describe and reflect on current issues within the philosophy of museums, particularly as they relate to museum missions, the interpretation of cultural objects, museum exhibits, and the role of museums in society.
5.  Identify ways museums can be relevant to the communities they serve and become more diverse, accessible, and inclusive spaces.
