ECON 34404 - Fed Challenge



This course helps to prepare students to participate in the College Fed Challenge Competition. In this Competition, a team of three to five students will make a video presentation on their recommended course of monetary policy, which the Federal Reserve should implement at the next Federal Open Market Committee based on the current state of the economy. The semi-finals would include prepping for a 15-minute question-and-answer session in front of a panel of at least 3 federal reserve judges.

Preparation for Course
P: ECON 20201 (or equivalent).

Junior or senior class standing required.
Permission of the instructor is required since the course is a non-traditional, research-based course.
Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Collect, analyze, and interpret current U.S. and international economic data to determine the health of the U.S. economy as it relates to the nearest upcoming Federal Reserve Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting.
2.  Form the proper interpretation of current economic data using some elements of data analytics
3.  Provide a monetary policy recommendation for the current state of the economy by weighing the costs and benefits of the recommendation.
4.  Communicate current economic data through graphs and tables in a group video presentation.
5.  Discuss macroeconomic topics as they relate to the dual mandate of the Federal Reserve in the 15-minute question-and-answer session with experts.
