BIOL 34010 - Silvics Of North America



Characteristics of trees and forest stands, including influences on growth, development, and reproduction. Additionally, the course will cover field identification and taxonomy of common trees and shrubs from North America.

Preparation for Course
P: BIOL 11700 with a grade of C- or better.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Gain an understanding of ecological characteristics influencing tree and shrub species distributions.
2.  Apply diagnostic and identification skills related to leaf, bud, twig, bark, flower, and fruit characteristics, including use of dichotomous keys. 
3.  Analyze taxonomic relationships between tree and shrub families and genera, as well as Latin definitions of many species’ names.
