MET 36400 - Basic Tooling For Machining



A comprehensive survey of tooling as it is used in converting workpieces into finished products with consideration of cost, quality, quantity, interchangeability, and safety requirements. Actual analysis of many machining operations and tooling setup will be provided for comparison studies. 

Preparation for Course
P: MET 10400 and 18000.

Student Learning Outcomes
1. Understand metal cutting theories and machining of metals, including chip formation, cutting forces, machine power requirements, temperature control, tool wear and life as well as cutting fluid selection, use, and disposal.
2. Correlate tool and work piece materials based upon machinability and machining operations.
3. Select and design tooling appropriate for various machining operations.
4. Articulate and address solutions for safety issues related to machining.
5. Ability to form  process improvements.
