MUSC 38366 - Music Business: Start Up To Success



Introduce students to the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to manage a record label and music publishing either as a start up or with an established company. Students will learn the foundational concepts of music business management and will gain the skills necessary to run a music business. 

Preparation for Course
P: Admitted as a Music Industry or Popular Music major in the School of Music.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Demonstrate how the music industry has adapted and changed in the past decades.
2.  Identify marketing techniques for a new artist and determine when each should be used.
3.  Breakdown the roles of record label.
4.  Demonstrate how to calculate and oversee artists and publishing royalties.
5.  Use industry software and websites to register and manage artist and songwriter catalogs.
6.  Illustrate how live and recorded sides of the industry intersect and contribute to the success of the artist.
