BIOL 32401 - Antibiotic Discovery



Using an authentic research project, students will gain skills in the process of scientific inquiry, including hypothesis generation and testing, and in common procedures of microbial culture and characterization. Students enrolled in the course will be part of a national student crowd sourcing initiative to identify novel antibiotics and increased microbial resistance. Students will report their findings with peer feedback.

Preparation for Course
P: BIOL 11700 and 11900 with grades or C- or better (or equivalent), and biology major.

P or C: CHM 11600.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Discuss the challenges and potential solutions to the antibiotic crisis.
2.  Develop skills and understanding in the types of experiments and observations used in microbiology and molecular biology.
3.  Develop skills and competence in performing laboratory experiments and working with equipment that will be the basis for performing other labs and in your professional life as a scientist.
4.  Develop and broaden skills in scientific writing and formats that can be used in other labs and as a professional scientist.
5.  Acquire and use your skills in working in a group, delegating tasks and developing a consensus.
6.  Learn to organize data and use it to examine a hypothesis.
7.  Gain factual knowledge about several basic biology subjects as well as learn and observe some biological principles and theories.
8.  Learn to find and use resources to answer biological questions.
