EDU 22200 - Early Childhood Multilingual Learners



In this course you will learn about the prevalence of multilingual learners in early childhood and preschool programs in the United States. You will learn strategies for teaching multilingual children, culture, engaging families, and scientifically based early language and literacy classroom practices that support second language development while maintaining the home language.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Understand the scope of multilingual families and children in early childhood programs in the United States and the local community.
2.  Learn the significance of maintaining the home language for social, emotional, and cognitive outcomes for young children.
3.  Learn strategies to engage with linguistically diverse families of young children to maintain home language and learn about cultural differences.
4.  Explore ways in which teachers can develop literacy and language curriculum and intergrade teaching methods that support linguistically diverse children.
5.  Learn how language and reading acquisition differ for multilingual learners based on differences in language structure, decoding, reading, and writing development and language differences.
