HTM 22400 - Destination Management/Convention Management



This course will give students a basic understanding of the roles destination management organizations (DMOs) and convention and visitors bureaus (CVBs) play in the tourism industry. All aspects of organization operations are covered, including service, research, product development, human resources, and financial management.

Preparation for Course
P:  HTM 10000, 18100 and 21400.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Identify and describe the importance of the role of Destination Management Organizations (DMOs)/Convention and Visitors Bureaus (CVBs) towards potential clients and the region or city’s tourism and wider business community.
2.  Compare and contrast the infrastructure and resources available that support the tourism, convention and meeting business of a region and or city.
3.  Analyze DMOs/CVBs marketing plans and describe elements and tools included in such plans.
4.  Describe the process of branding a destination, and explain how branding relates to theme development and advertising.
5.  Identify research projects typically undertaken by a DMOs/CVBs and describe their relevance to the organization.
6.  Describe the tactics used by a DMOs/CVBs for media and non-media communications.
7.  Explain the importance of a DMOs/CVBs crisis communication plan, and describe the steps in creating such a plan.
8.  Describe the unique challenges faced by DMOs/CVBs product development and marketing, and explain the DMOs/CVBs marketing dilemma.
9.  Describe the features of effective DMOs/CVBs Web sites, and explain the factors to consider when building a successful destination Web site.
10.  Explain the components of a strategic Internet marketing plan, and identify ongoing online marketing, communication, and research tasks necessary for a successful Internet marketing plan.
11.  Recognize the elements involved with DMOs/CVBs financial management, revenue sources, IRS status, financial statements, and public disclosure of information.
12.  Identify the importance of alliances and partnerships for DMOs/CVBs, list potential alliance partners, and describe programs they may put into place.
