ENGL 19000 - Rhetorical Reading



A college-level course that challenges students to expand their repertoire of reading performances and become better readers of public and academic texts.

Student Learning Outcomes
1. Use textual features to identify important content along with source, audience, and purpose; comprehending main points or claims and their support; accurately and responsibly summarizing and paraphrasing content.
2. Explain how a text is constructed for a particular purpose and audience; identifying rhetorical appeals and effects; considering the impact of context, genre, and audience on a text’s message; comparing and synthesizing texts.
3. Evaluate the strength of claims or main points and their support; distinguishing fact from interpretation; recognizing faulty reasoning; determining credibility; considering implications of a text. 
4. Apply effective reading strategies for different texts and purposes; understanding how writers and readers affect a text’s message and meaning; developing personal reading practices and strategies.
