WOST 22500 - Gender, Sexuality, Race, And Popular Culture



Examination of popular culture, including but not limited to music, television, cinema, fiction, theatre, radio, journalism, gaming, social media, podcasts, and other mass media. Emphasis on the intersectional analysis of representations of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, and disability across pop culture sites from feminist perspectives.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Recognize, describe, and analyze popular culture and its role in shaping our gendered lives.
2.  Recognize and analyze gender as a social construction and its intersections with race, sexuality, ethnicity, and ability.
3.  Formulate significant critical questions about representations of gender, race, and sexuality within various popular media.
4.  Summarize, analyze, and discuss a range of popular media from an intersectional feminist and anti-racist perspective.
5.  Summarize, analyze, and discuss expository and argumentative writings of various complexity.
6.  Compose effective written texts and/or oral presentations that explore and explicate these questions.
