NELC 15000 - Elementary Arabic II
Modern standard Arabic as in contemporary literature, newspapers, and radio. Grammar, reading, dictation, composition, penmanship, conversation, translation.
Preparation for Course P: NELC 10000 (or equivalent) or placement via department placement process.
Cr. 3. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Learn to speak Functional Modern Standard Arabic in order to carry out a variety of basic functions. (Speaking)
2. Learn to comprehend other speakers of Modern Standard Arabic. (Listening)
3. Learn to understand the gist of simple texts; identify different types of texts; and guess the meanings of words using the context and prior knowledge about the subject matter. They will learn to scan text for specific information; guess the theme of a text by using their knowledge of familiar vocabulary, and make guesses about the meanings of unfamiliar vocabulary by breaking words down into smaller elements and roots. (Reading)
4. Learn how to form words using the Arabic script, and throughout the Arabic Standard Course sequence, cadets will learn how to write phrases and short sentences in Arabic related to basic situations. (Writing)
5. Focus on encouraging an appreciation of the diversity of the Arab World. (Culture and History)
