MUSC 35700 - Music In Special Education



Introduction to teaching music to students with special needs including those with cognitive, physical, behavioral, and emotional disabilities. Development of skills in planning and structuring experiences to facilitate appropriate participation of students in the K-12 classroom. Overview of various disabilities and historical, cultural, and ethical issues. Participation in experiential music lessons and simulations; field observations of special needs students in music education.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Identify current profile of students with disabilities in public schools.
2.  Identify methods of evaluation and assessment appropriate to the inclusive music classroom.
3.  Outline the historical and instructional foundations of music in special education and trends affecting special learners in the United States.
4.  Analyze current legislation on special education.
5.  Structure lesson plans adapted for children and youth with disabilities commonly found in early intervention and K-12.
6.  Design an Individualized Education Program (IEP) with goals and objectives appropriate for the music classroom.
