ILCS 30000 - Methods Of Research And Criticism
Study of methods of literary analysis and bibliographical documentation. Basic techniques of research, footnoting, and intensive writing. Critical approaches to traditional and digital works of literature, with a primary focus on works from the Spanish-language, French-language, German-language, Arabic-language and Japanese-language traditions (read in English translation). Required for Spanish majors. Approved by College of Liberal Arts for use in fulfilling the Second Semester Writing, Research, and Methods requirement (COLA Requirements, Part B) and as an option for fulfilling Thematic Area E with a non-Western designation in the College of Liberal Arts Requirements.
Preparation for Course P: ENGL 13100 or ENGL 23301 or equivalent.
Cr. 3. Notes Required for foreign language majors. Approved by College of Liberal Studies for use in fulfilling the sophomore writing requirement. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Improve methods for humanities research.
2. Demonstrate an ability to develop a sophisticated academic argument.
3. Demonstrate the ability to compare literature across two or more cultural contexts.
4. Demonstrate competent academic writing of varying lengths and for varying purposes (i.e., summary, argumentative in a comparative context, conference paper length research essay).
5. Demonstrate understanding of central concepts in literary theory.
6. Demonstrate the ability to analyze literature across multiple media (e.g., film, e-literature).
7. Expand their understanding of the Francophone, Hispanic, German, Arabic and Japanese literary contexts.
