HTM 18100 - Introduction To Lodging Management



Organization, management and operating procedures of lodging facilities. Guest-employee interactions will be analyzed along with current trends and cutting edge topics in the lodging industry. A history of the lodging industry will be discussed.

Preparation for Course
P: HTM 10000 with grade of C- or better.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Describe the evolution of the lodging sector in the United States (U.S.) and around the world.
2.  Identify hotel types, brands as well as management and ownership structures in 21st century lodging business.
3.  Describe how work is organized in hotels.
4.  State the duties and responsibilities of positions within lodging business.
5.  Describe and critically evaluate front office and housekeeping procedures in hotels.
6.  Identify internal and external reports (such as the STR Report) commonly used in lodging business.
7.  Compute basic key performance indicators (KPIs) (such as occupancy percent, ADR, RevPar).
8.  Discuss some of the latest technological advances in lodging business.
9.  Describe common unethical practices and innovative strategies in reducing such practices in lodging business.
10.  Describe other tourism business sectors that interconnect with lodging.
