Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Continue the development of all the language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. We will also work on the expansion of vocabulary and on a review of the major grammatical structures of German. The texts used in this class are “authentic texts,” not merely simplified or edited texts but just what native speakers of German would come across in newspapers, websites, and non-fiction works.
2.  Be exposed to such topics that are of relevance for Germans in the present and the past. We will get insights into Germany’s historical, political, and cultural background. For example, we will read about Germany’s past as an empire, German emigrants, Nazi Germany, the GDR, but also “lighter” topics, such as Germany as a soccer nation, German stereotypes, and Germany as a travel destination.
3.  Gain a broad understanding about Germany as a country and German history and culture, past and present.
