FR 34000 - Introduction To Contemporary French Society
This course will introduce students to various aspects of French culture and society. Through selected readings and films students will develop an understanding of the contemporary history, politics, and geography of France.
Preparation for Course FR 20401 or equivalent or permission of the instructor.
Cr. 3. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate an understanding of French cultural practices and analyze the concept of French identity.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of how cultural and regional diversity shape notions of national belonging.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the key cultural and ideological debates in contemporary France and how they shape France’s place in and relationship with the rest of the world.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of key thematic and organizational units structuring contemporary French society, including geography, politics, social practices and cultural norms in everyday France.
5. Demonstrate an ability to identify and describe everyday cultural practices in France via the examination of digital and other multimedia resources.
6. Demonstrate the ability to reading, speak, listen and write in French at a more advanced level.
