FR 33001 - Introduction To Translating French And English
A comparative study of the style and grammar of both languages with focus on the difficulties involved in translating. Introduction to the various tools of the art of translation.
Preparation for Course P: FR 20401 or equivalent or permission of the instructor.
Cr. 3. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of key concepts in the work of translation, including concepts and areas such as translation units, the field of semantics and false cognates.
2. Demonstrate the ability to complete basic preparatory translation exercises from French to English and vice versa.
3. Demonstrate the ability to translate a varied selection of kinds of works, such as prose, theater, poetry and documents in the worlds of business and non-profits.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the key tasks that make up the work of a translator, the most common kinds of errors that take place in that work and key strategies to avoid mistakes of translation.
5. Demonstrate an improved understanding of both the French and English languages.
