AD 23501 - Ceramics Fundamentals
Fundamental techniques of forming by hand-building methods, glazing and firing clay objects. Introduction to the creative possibilities of this craft through projects in tile, pottery form, and sculpture. Emphasis on self-expression through good design and understanding the medium.
Preparation for Course P: In a program of the Department of Art and Design.
Cr. 3. Hours Studio. 6. Notes Minimum grade of C- required to count towards any program of the Department of Art and Design. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate proficiency in the basic skills of hand building, throwing and finishing ceramic objects by watching Instructor demonstrations; completing assignments and practicing outside of class.
2. Develop a basic understanding of art and design principles relating to ceramic art through individual research; sketching; instructor demonstrations; image presentations and class discussions.
3. Draw connections from ceramics to other disciplines and increase ability to describe and analyze visual art forms through class critiquing exercises, individual research, reading and writing based on each assignment.
4. Develop a basic vocabulary for discussing ceramic art to aid in the successful completion of the course by learning application key terms.
5. Become familiar with both contemporary and historical ceramic forms through assigned individual or group research; demonstrations; presentations and completion of assignments.
6. Work effectively in an organized and incremental way, managing time and resources to complete projects and meet deadlines.
