ENGL 20501 - Introduction To The English Language
Introduction to reasoning about English syntax and semantics.
Preparation for Course P: ENGL 13100 (or Equivalent).
Cr. 3. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Identify and describe the fundamental components of linguistic structure-phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics-using appropriate terminology.
2. Explain the basic historical development of English, including major periods of change and influences from other languages.
3. Recognize and evaluate patterns of language variation and change in English across regions, social groups, and contexts.
4. Apply principles of linguistic analysis to examples of spoken and written English, demonstrating an understanding of descriptive (not prescriptive) approaches to language.
5. Reflect critically on one’s own assumptions about “standard English,” language correctness, and linguistic diversity.
