EDU 40101 - Critical Reading In The Content Area



This course aids prospective secondary teachers in using evidence-based instructional strategies that support students in comprehending and critically analyzing disciplinary texts. Public school participation is required.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Demonstrate knowledge of foundations of content-area and disciplinary literacy, including scientifically based reading research theories and processes, the role of motivation in literacy development, and the literacy skills required in their chosen discipline.
2.  Select evidence-based strategies for content-area and disciplinary literacy instruction that align with state standards, suit the established learning objectives, and meet student needs.
3.  Employ evidence-based teaching practices to enhance students’ vocabulary and use of academic language.
4.  Use evidence-based instructional strategies to facilitate students’ comprehension before, during, and after reading disciplinary texts.
5.  Apply evidence-based instructional methods that advance students’ recognition, analysis, and use of text structures and features to enhance comprehension.
6.  Use evidence-based teaching practices to support students’ disciplinary writing skills.
7.  Use evidence-based teaching practices to foster a literacy-rich classroom environment that values cultural diversity, promotes respect for readers regardless of proficiency level, and engages all students as agents in their literacy development.
