EDU 44301 - Teaching Elementary Mathematics Problem Solving
The teaching and learning of problem solving. Topics include types of problems, appropriate instructional sequences, strategies for solving problems, factors related to problem difficulty, evaluating problem-solving learning. Work with elementary school children is included.
Cr. 3. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Read about and experience activities that encourage thinking about the teaching and learning of mathematics through problem solving.
2. Become knowledgeable about the methodology advocated by the National Council of Teachers and Mathematics (NCTM) and the Indiana Department of Education.
3. Adapt curriculum to utilize discussion and questioning strategies and multiple approaches and representations as central underlying foci in the teaching and learning of mathematics through problem solving.
4. Learn key components for teaching and learning mathematics through problem solving by reading assignments and preparing activities associated with those topics.
