EDU 44300 - Methods Of Teaching High School Social Studies
Prepares prospective teachers to design and apply methods of teaching social studies at the secondary level. Public school participation required.
Cr. 3. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate knowledge of social studies disciplines. Candidates are knowledgeable of disciplinary concepts, facts, and tools; structures of inquiry; and forms of representation.
2. Plan learning sequences that leverage social studies knowledge and literacies, technology, and theory and research to support the civic competence of learners.
3. Design and implement instruction and authentic assessments, informed by data literacy and learner self-assessment, that promote civic competence.
4. Use knowledge of learners to plan and implement relevant and responsive pedagogy, create collaborative and interdisciplinary learning environments, and prepare learners to be informed advocates for an inclusive and equitable society.
5. Use communication methods that promote student learning and foster active inquiry, interaction, and collaboration in the history classroom.
6. Use instructional strategies that facilitate collaborative, interdisciplinary learning environments in which learners use disciplinary facts, concepts, and tools to engage in disciplinary inquiry and create disciplinary forms of representation.
7. Understand and implement procedures for long- and short-range instructional planning (e.g., aligning instruction with the learning progression within identified content standards, determining prerequisite knowledge and skills), factors to consider in instructional planning (e.g., nature of the content; time and other resources available; student assessment data; characteristics of effective lesson and unit plans; students’ characteristics, prior experiences, current knowledge and skills, and readiness to learn), and the ability to use this knowledge to plan effective, developmentally appropriate student learning experiences.
