ECET 35500 - Data Communications and Networking
A survey of communication and networking techniques, protocols and standards. Topics include OSI model, TCP/IP protocols and applications, signals, encoding and modulation, transmission of data and interfaces, transmission media, multiplexing, error detection and correction, data link controls and protocols, switching techniques, and other popular network services.
Preparation for Course P: ECET 20500 or ITC 22000.
Cr. 4. Hours Class 3, Lab. 2-3. Student Learning Outcomes A student who successfully fulfills the course requirements will have demonstrated the following knowledge, skills, and ability:
1. Knowledge and skills of applying fundamental data communications and network concepts and terminology; and adapting emerging network applications (TAC/ABET item a)
2. An ability to work with data communication hardware and software components (TAC/ABET item c)
3 To understand network security issues (TAC/ABET item a)
4. Understand the signals, different encoding and modulating techniques, multiplexing, and switching used at the physical layer (TAC/ABET item b)
5. Know about the current network infrastructure (TAC/ABET item f)
6. Know about the error detection and correction, data link controls and protocols used at the data link layer (TAC/ABET item b)
7. Know about Internet Protocol, addressing and routing techniques at the network layer (TAC/ABET item f)
8. Know about protocol, and congestion control at the transport layer (TAC/ABET item b)
9. Work as a member of team to finish the lab assignments (TAC/ABET item e)
10. Write a lab report (TAC/ABET item g1)
