The biology of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and algae) and their interactions with humans. Emphasis on microbes with medical and/or public health significance. Specific areas of study include characteristics, metabolism, and genetics of bacteria; host-parasite interactions; factors affecting human health and disease states; principles of disinfection and sterilization; epidemiology of infectious disease with emphasis on transmission, prevention, and treatment; and nosocomial infection risks and prevention.
Preparation for Course P: BIOL 20300.
Cr. 4. Hours Class 3, Lab. 2. Notes Indiana Core Transfer Library course. This course is designed for Nursing and Allied Health students. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Communicate fundamental concepts of microbiology concerning evolution, cell structure and function, metabolic pathways, information flow and genetics, microbial systems and the impact of microorganisms.
2. Discuss the processes of immunology and infectious disease and describe specific examples of microbial infections.
3. Describe the use of microorganisms as model systems that give us fundamental knowledge about life processes.
4. Demonstrate the ability to make connections between concepts across microbiology.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of science on society.
6. Demonstrate routine experiments and safety in the lab.
7. Apply the scientific method in lab experiences to interpret information and draw conclusions.
