BIOL 14000 - Marine Biology



Introduction to the science of marine biology. Topics include a coverage of the following marine groups: plant, invertebrates and vertebrates. Additional lectures are provided in marine ecosystems, oceanography and marine resources.

Preparation for Course
P: BIOL 10000 or Equivalent for High School students and BIOL 11700 for PFW students. Consent of instructor required.

Field trip costs are the responsibility of the student. Available as a free elective. Cannot be used to satisfy Group A or B elective requirements for biology majors.
Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Identify the phyla of plants and animals found in marine and marginal marine environments.
2.  List the marine and marginal marine ecological environments/benthic and pelagic depth zones.
3.  Describe the global circulation of the atmosphere and ocean and explain their effects on a global scale.
4.  Explain the causes and characteristics of waves and tides and their effects on the coastal marine environments.
5.  Describe the topography of the ocean basins in terms of plate tectonic systems.
6.  Discuss physical and biological aspects of marine ecosystems in the different environments and climate zones.
7.  Explain the existence of marine biogeographic realms.
8.  Discuss the various physiological adaptations that marine organisms utilize to maintain homeostasis and to live in the various marine environments.
9.  Describe the methods and challenges of conserving marine species and the effects of human activities on marine species and environments.
