With a concentration in Media, Rhetoric, and Culture, students will learn both the history and practices of media, meaning-making, media industries, and how to analyze and criticize human discourse in relationship to persuasion and representations. Students will develop understanding, insights, and practical skills necessary for an expanding and changing job market as well as how to be a more critically engaged citizen of the world. Students will build specific skills in media analysis, media production, writing for mass media, public relations, new media, audience research, and other careers within communication industries.
Student Learning Outcomes for the Media, Rhetoric, and Culture Concentration:
Upon completion of this concentration, students will be able to:
- Identify and analyze both the history and practice of media industries
- Identify and analyze relations between media, rhetoric, culture, and democracy
- Identify and apply theoretical concepts and processes to critically analyze media and rhetorical artifact(s) and their relationships to audiences and the public across local/global contexts
- Discuss the ethical responsibilities of a media and cultural critic
- Analyze various rhetorical discourses to become informed, critical receivers of persuasive messages in their professional and everyday lives
