First-Year Engineering

The First-Year Engineering (FYE) program is the entry point for all beginning engineering students at Purdue University Fort Wayne. All new engineering students must complete the first-year engineering requirements before entering the engineering program of their choice. This core curriculum includes courses in engineering fundamentals, math, chemistry, physics, and written and oral communication skills. The first-year engineering (FYE) program is jointly managed by the CME department and the ECE department.

The first-year engineering program has three overall (two-semester) outcomes. A student who successfully completes the first-year engineering program (ENGR 12700 and 12800) will be able to:

  1. solve and document the solution of problems involving different elements or configurations not previously encountered (e.g. a new geometric arrangement, a new term to include in an analysis, a new type of starting condition),
  2. solve problems using multiple approaches including (e.g., equations including varied analytic approaches, diagrams, formal solution steps or simple computer programs),
  3. describe the broad nature of various engineering majors and the engineering profession and use this information to make appropriate career choices.

Recommended courses to be taken in the first year:

First semester:

Total number of credits: 15

Second semester:

Total number of credits: 16 or 18.

Students also have the option to take COM 11400 in the first semester and take ENGL 13100 in the second semester.

Policies of First-Year Engineering

A student is only allowed to attempt ENGR 12700 three times and ENGR 12800 three times. This includes all attempts that have earned a withdrawal, letter grade, or pass/no pass. If a student fails to earn a successful grade (C- or higher or pass) after three attempts in either course, the student is removed from the mechanical, civil, electrical, and computer engineering programs at Purdue University Fort Wayne and is not eligible for re-entry.
