First-Year Engineering

The First-year Engineering Program is the entry point for all beginning engineering students. All engineering students at Purdue University Fort Wayne must complete the first-year engineering requirements before entering the engineering program of their choice. This core curriculum includes courses in math, chemistry, physics, computer programming and communication skills, as well as an introductory to engineering design course. The freshman program coordinators, the engineering faculty and staff are dedicated to assisting engineering students with their first-year experience.

Recommended courses to be taken in the first year:

First semester:

• MA 16500 - Analytic Geometry And Calculus I  Cr. 4.
• CHM 11500 - General Chemistry  Cr. 4.
• ENGR 12700 - Engineering Fundamentals I  Cr. 4.
• ENGL 13100 - Reading, Writing, And Inquiry I  or General Education B5/B6 elective  Cr. 3.

Total number of credits: 15

Second semester:

• MA 16600 - Analytic Geometry And Calculus II  Cr. 4.
• PHYS 15200 - Mechanics  Cr. 5.
• ENGR 12800 - Engineering Fundamentals II  Cr. 4.
• ME 16000 - Solid Modeling  Cr. 2. - only applies to students pursuing the Bachelor of Degree in Mechanical Engineering at a later time
• COM 11400 - Fundamentals Of Speech Communication  (Gen Ed A2) or General Education B5/B6 elective  Cr. 3.

Total number of credits: 16 or 18.

 

Students also have the option to take COM 11400 in the first semester and take ENGL 13100 in the second semester.
