 Students who complete the bachelor’s degree curriculum will:

1. Apply concepts and principles from human services courses to work settings.

2. Implement practice theories and design treatment plans utilizing the appropriate theory.

3. Demonstrate competency, by analyzing human services helping skills.

4. Understand the structure and function of human services organizations.

5. Use a variety of computer programs necessary in human services organizations.

6. Demonstrate competency in two concentration areas.

7. Engage in a service learning project in the community.

8. Understand people from a diverse range of backgrounds and varying demographics characteristics.

9. Understand methods, analyses, and interpretation for human services’ research.

10. Think critically using a clinical lens when working with clients.

11. Analyze their own values, predicting how these values will affect their academic and professional experiences.

12. Apply professional ethics and standards in human service settings.

13. Involve themselves in professional organizations and activities and lifelong learning.


The Bachelor of Science in Human Services is a degree that requires a total of 120 semester credit hours. The program is designed to prepare students to become human service professionals who can meet the needs of clients and communities within a diverse society.

Some professionals in Human Services prefer working as a group home supervisor, substance abuse prevention educator, case manager, social service agency staff/manager, and psychiatric rehabilitation worker/supervisor, among others.

Admission

To gain entry into this program, students must meet all of the requirements for admission to IPFW, the Department of Human Services, and comply with requirements for internship placements.  Students should contact the Department of Human Services at 260-481-6424 for more information and to be assigned an advisor.

Human Services Admission Requirements

Students are admitted to this degree program as follows:

  • Students new to IPFW must complete an application for undergraduate admission and meet the criteria for admission to the University. In addition, students must complete a two step TB test, a criminal background check, and a drug test. Students who have previously taken courses at IPFW should apply for re-entry to the University if they have not been actively enrolled at IPFW for one year or greater. Contact the Office of Admissions at 260-481-6812. Students must have a 2.8 in pre-requisite courses and a cumulative GPA of 2.0.  Prerequisite courses include:  COM 11400, ENG W131, HSRV 10000, HSRV 10300, HSRV 10500, PSY 12000 and SOC S161.

  • Students who have completed the requirements for the Associate of Science in Human Services at Ivy Tech Community College or another Human Services program from another accredited institution, and have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 with no grades of D or F, are enrolled in the program with junior status.

  • All students will be required to meet the regular IPFW and Purdue University admission standards, as presented in the IPFW Bulletin.
     
  • The Bachelor’s degree requires four semesters of Internship (360 hours) at an approved agency in northeastern Indiana.

Students must comply with agency requirements for internship placements. A live interview is required. The agencies require proof of a 2-step TB test, background check, and a 10-panel drug screen.

Anyone with a record of a sex crime against a child may not be placed into a clinical in which there is an actual or potential possibility that they will come into contact with children (IC5-2-12-12). Students who cannot be placed in clinicals with reasonable effort as a result of their criminal histories and subsequently cannot complete the program requirements will be unable to graduate from the program.

Human Service Concentration Credits: 24


 Students’ must complete 12 credits in concentration Area A and 12 credits in concentration Area B.   See your academic advisor for approval of your chosen concentration areas and for approval of courses under each concentration area. All couses require a C- or higher.

Concentration A


All Concentration Area courses must be approved by the student’s advisor prior to registration. Students are allowed to choose four courses in their chosen area of program concentration. Not all courses are taught every semester. Courses taken to fulfill concentration areas cannot be used to fulfill any other requirement. It is the responsibility of the student to check for course pre-requisites prior to meeting with the advisor. *Please note that credit will not be given for both PSY 235 and PSY 369.

Concentration B


All Concertation Area courses must be approved by the student’s advisor prior to registration. Human Services students are allowed to choose four 300-400 level courses in their chosen area of program concentration. Not all courses are offered every semester. There are specific 100 and 200 level courses listed on this suggestion sheet (CSD 115, PSY 235, and SPAN), however no others will be considered. Courses taken to fulfill concentration areas cannot be used to fulfill any other requirement. You may use a Concentration A selection for your Concentration B if all 12 credits are at 300 or 400 levels. Not all courses are taught every semester. It is the responsibility of the student to check for course pre-requisites prior to meeting with the advisor. *Please note that credit will not be given for both PSY 235 and PSY 369.
