German with Teacher Certification (B.A.)

The student learning outcomes for the degree are as follows:

  • Acquire a broad foundation in language, literature, culture and a knowledge of current methodologies in foreign language pedagogy;
  • Achieve the ACTFL intermediate-high level in speaking, demonstrate the ability to recognize and analyze grammatical and usage errors in own and others’ writing;
  • Develop an increased understanding of what it means to belong to a culture and awareness of how culture affects other interconnected issues of identity;
  • Demonstrate the ability to think critically about these issues and how they shape intercultural communication.  

Students pursuing a B.A. in German with teacher certification must fulfill the requirements of IPFW (see Part 8 ) and the College of Arts and Sciences (see Part 4 ) and satisfactorily complete the following requirements. 

Prior to your junior year, the Department of Educational Studies requires that you successfully complete EDUC F200, EDUC W200, and EDUC K306 and the Pearson Core Academic Subject Assessment (CASA) or approved alternative before admission to the professional education program.  You must also establish a minimum 2.70 GPA in your content (major) courses and a 2.70 cumulative GPA for admission to this program.  The Pearson CORE content exam must be taken before the student teaching semester.  You must apply for student teaching one year in advance of the semester you plan to student teach.  You must also pass the Pearson pedagogy exam for Secondary Education, pass the CORE content exam, and achieve a 3.00 GPA in your major and overall to obtain the teaching license.  For more information on these and other requirements, please contact the College of Education and Public Policy, EPIC Office, in Neff Hall 243, 260-481-6449.

Students must complete 33 credit hours of German course credit (GER) at the 300 and 400 level, including at least 27 credit hours in courses taught in German. 

  • Credits in German culture, normally G362, G363, G463, or G464 Credits: 3

  • Additional German credits at the 300 level Credits: 6
  • Additional German language skills credits at the 300 level, normally G318 or G319 Credits: 3
  • Credits in 400-level German courses (language, literature, and/or culture) Credits: 9

Professional Education


Prior to being admitted to the teacher education program, you must complete the Initial Requirement courses and pass the PPST.

General Elective Courses


  • Sufficient additional credits, if necessary, to bring the total to 124.
