Department of Interdisciplinary Studies
College of Liberal Arts

Liberal Arts Building 153 - 260-481-6160

Janet Badia, Dean and Department Director
Sue Miller, Administrative Assistant to the Dean

The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies houses the College of Liberal’s core required course and a variety of degree, certificate, and minor programs that reflect the long tradition in the liberal arts of teaching and learning across disciplinary boundaries. From film and media studies, to international studies, to medieval studies, to women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, these programs share the practice of challenging the boundaries that have historically distinguished one academic discipline from another. For some programs, this goal is accomplished through an interdisciplinary approach to the subject matter-one in which knowledge and methods from different disciplines are integrated. For others, it encompasses an approach to knowledge and research that aims to establish new, transdisciplinary intellectual frameworks that go beyond the traditional disciplines. Regardless of the approach, the goal is to provide a transformative education to students, one well-suited to the complex and rapidly changing world we inhabit in the twentieth-first century.
